Hitchin Lavender | Day Out

I’ve always wanted to visit lavender fields and we finally did for our wedding anniversary! I’ve seen hundreds of gorgeous pictures on Instagram of beautiful Lavender Fields, and I was so happy to see that we live less than an hour from one here in England. Hitchin Lavender is located in Hertfordshire and it’s a great place to visit a little over an hour outside of London. We visited this week, after they have re-opened after the COVID-19 Lockdown here in England. It’s something you can defintiely do for a day out, depending on where you are coming from.

So if you’ve done anything post lockdown, you’ll know that nothing seems to be as it once was. Here are a few things to note that Hitchin Lavender is doing differently now. The most important thing to do is make sure that you have tickets booked in advance, tickets can be purchased through their website. Currently (July 2020) the cost is 6 pounds per adult it includes admittance into the fields, but you are not allowed to pick lavender this summer. The tea shop is open, and there are picnic tables to use as well. As most places, there is plenty of hand sanitizer for people to use and the number of people admitted is being controlled as well. There are 2 hour time slots where you can visit, the last one is from 6pm-8pm, and it’s easy to spend two hours here easily.

Other than that, walking the fields while enjoying the lavender and the views is completely wonderful. Like I said, we spent almost 2 hours walking the fields, admiring the views, listening to the humming of bees, and enjoying a lavender shortcake from the tea shop. There is an incline in the fields and you can walk the entire length of the field, definitely get to the top of the hill, the views looking down on the lavender fields and the surrounding countryside are gorgeous.

There are lots of bees, however they do not seem bothered by people walking around. If you don’t bother them doing their work, they won’t really care that you are around. You’ll want to make sure you do take a bit of walk into the fields themselves, you’ll smell the lavender and it’s a beautiful experience to be surrounded by the gorgeous blooming lavender.

Currently there were sections of the fields that were more in bloom than others. Hitchin Lavender has a Facebook page and and Instagram page where they update what the lavender is currently looking like. So if you have flexibility in when you can visit, you might want to go on there first to see what the bloom looks like.

You can take your own picnic as well, at the top of the hill there are areas where you can set up a picnic blanket and enjoy the scenery. Or you can use some of the picnic tables that are located near the entrance. Currently there are only 2 hour slots, so if you’d like to spend a little more time in this area, there is a footpath that takes you around the fields as well. You’ll see if where the car park is and you can take a walk along there into the nearby country side.

Overall if you want a short day out Hitchin Lavender is a great place. Or if you are already traveling through this area, it could be something you can easily add onto your day. If you can, definitely visit these lavender fields, or others you may have nearby, it is a gorgeous and relaxing little experience.

Tip: If you want lavender to take pictures with, since you can’t pick your own this year, stop by the shop first and buy a bunch of dried lavender. The one they are selling is dried from their 2019 lavender pick. It’s fragrant and beautiful!
